Alvar Bio
- Nuance Galleries is very proud of our long-term relationship with
Alvar. We have represented him since our opening in 1981 and have had
Alvar attend 7 exhibitions. The last exhibition in 2005 was a
collaboration with the beautiful Appleton Museum in Ocala.
Robert Rowen is a passionate collector of Alvar’s work and has many of
his original lithographs in his home. The collectors who have met Alvar,
all agree that he exudes a spiritual and peaceful beauty and enjoys
meeting people who love his work. Alvar works in many mediums and brings
his passionate imagery to all of them. His best known works are in oil,
bronze and original lithography, though you will also find him working
in watercolor, pencil, ceramic and etching. He is unique among today’s
more popular artists in that he does all of his own work and is a master
of the many mediums with a specialization in lithography and intaglio.
Many patrons at his shows are intrigued as he describes why he chooses
to do works in a particular medium and the challenges and satisfactions
each one brings.
Alvar was born on January 20, 1935, in Montgat, Spain, a Catalan fishing
village on the Mediterranean coast. He started painting oils at age
twelve and at seventeen was accepted at the Escuela Superior de Bellas
Artes de San Jorge, the prestigious fine art school in Barcelona. Before
graduating from the Bellas Artes, he gave his first solo exhibition at
Galleries Layetana in Barcelona in 1957. At age eighteen, Alvar entered
a painting in a competition for the Young Painters Prize sponsored by
the City of Barcelona. His painting won the grand prize and it is now in
the permanent collection of the Museum Of Modern Art, Barcelona, Spain.
Since a decisive one-man show in Paris, 1963, he has exhibited regularly
throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Japan and his
lithographs, paintings, and sculptures have been presented in major
galleries, along with major museums, throughout the world. He has long
captured the hearts of fine art collectors worldwide with the depicting
of his mystical figures with their bowls of fruit and doves listening to
the melodic sounds emanating from his musicians. Alvar’s passion for
painting is evident when one views the symbolism that he includes in
each and every one of his pieces. From the way his figures fingers
touch, to the white doves, to the laurel branch, and the apple or
watermelon shared by his figures, Alvar’s paintings explode with his own
sense of human nature.
